Survey: What's the structure of your content team?

Jimmy Daly
July 12, 2022

As a quick reminder, we'll be running mini-surveys like this about twice/month. The idea is to clearly understand the challenges content marketers face in their jobs and careers, then to help fix them. You can see the first survey here: Survey #1: Fair Pay.

If you haven't already, please join our Content Career Growth Slack community. This is where we conduct these surveys. We'd love to have you there.

Here is the survey we are reporting on this week.

Quick hits:

  • 47 respondents
  • 74% of respondents work on a small team of 1-3 people
  • 68% would like to expand their team
  • 61% say their manager gets content and supports their work
  • 74% have a budget for freelancers/agencies
  • Nearly everyone feels the content team is asked to do way too much work.

How many people at your company work on content marketing?

The huge majority of people work on very small content teams comprised of 1-3 people.

Do you have enough people working on content?

Interestingly, 68% of respondents said they need more people on their content team. This isn't at all surprising given how much work content teams are asked to take on.

Does your direct manager "get" content marketing?

I'll admit that I was surprised to here 61% of respondents say that their boss "gets" content marketing. We often hear that content marketers struggle to succeed because their management wants immediate results. Perhaps that cohort is louder than the rest.

Do you have a budget for freelancers, agencies, designers, etc.?

Given that most people want to expand their teams, I was at least happy to see that many of those same folks have freelance/agency budgets.

What's your biggest frustration with content marketing at your company?

The answers here were 🔥🔥🔥. Lots of people let it all out. This was an open-ended question and I'd prefer not to share exact answers so that people can feel comfortable providing this info anonymously. There were, however, a few recurring themes:

  • "My manager just doesn't get it."
  • "We are asked to do way more work than we have time for."
  • "Everyone wants more content."
  • "Unrealistic expectations."
  • "We don't have a content strategy." / "We don't have clear goals."

Stay tuned for Survey #3. 😀
